Laboratory Aquatic Animal Science Course       CAL-AQUA

The use of animals for scientific purposes requires a certification by the “Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (DGAV)”, the only competent authority in Portugal for that purpose, in accordance with the current legislation. For that, researcher must submit to DGAV a proof of education in Laboratory Animal Sciences, as the diploma of CAL-AQUA course.

Cal-Aqua is one of the few Laboratory Animal Science Course in the European Union specifically designed for the use of aquatic animals as experimental models, with particular emphasis on aquatic vertebrates (fish and amphibians) and cephalopods.

The objective of the CAL-AQUA course is to enable researchers to use aquatic animals as experimental models. The completion of Cal-Aqua will allow the certification as Research Technician to perform animal experimentation, according to Article 31º (2-a,c and d) of Decree-Law 113/2013, formerly known as “FELASA B Category”.

Cal-Aqua’s program is in accordance with the criteria established by the DGAV and the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science (FELASA) for courses in Laboratory Animals Sciences.
